Spring and fall tips
Easy Steps to Lawn Care
Having a beautiful lawn does not need magic. All you have to do is take care of it, the right way. Lawn care can be divided into five easy steps and religiously following these will yield the best results.
1. Mow efficiently.
Mowing does not only require cutting the grass in its right height, it also calls for you to do it in the right time of the year. Always mow the grass not less than one-third of its height as this tallness is optimum for efficient absorption of sunshine. The right amount of sunshine is needed for the grass to develop into a healthy plant. Mowed grass should also be left on the lawn to decompose as fertilizer, which is very essential to the lawn.
2. Use a sharp blade.
It is essential that you always use a sharp blade in cutting the grass as a dull one will only tear the grass and would make it difficult for the grass to fight off pests and diseases. Here’s a tip in determining if your blade needs sharpening: A few days after mowing, take a closer look at the grass. If its tips exhibit brown lines, then it is high time for you to take action.
3. Regulate water supply.
Proper irrigation serves you best by preventing problems on pest growth and plant diseases. Excessive watering would prove to be more disadvantageous than lack of water. On the average, grasses only need a weekly water supply of 1 to 1.5 inches. This amount is enough for clay soils to be moistened four to six inches below the surface, and sandy soils, eight to ten inches. It is advised that you use a rain gauge to determine water supply during the rain and to regulate amounts of it accordingly.
4. Keep fertilizers and pesticides at normal levels.
The key is for you not to “overfeed” your lawn with these chemicals. During spring, summer, early fall and after the first fall, provide plenty but balanced amounts of fertilizer. On a drought, skip summer feeding but not fall feeding.
5. Prevent, rather than cure.
The adage, prevention is better than cure, can also be applied in lawn care. To save yourself from troubles concerning bugs, pests and diseases, regularly feed your lawn with the required levels of pesticides. Repair bare sports as needed and use the right herbicides to control and manage the growth of weeds.
As you can see, maintaining your lawn is as easy as 1-2-3. Making it the most beautiful ornament in the house can be achieved with the use of the above-mentioned methods.
